One Year of Jula Bloom

From Dutch Heritage to Sustainable Beauty: Celebrating One Year of Jula Bloom

How homesickness for flowers led to building a sustainable business.

The Spark That Started It All

It started with homesickness and a simple frustration. After moving from the Netherlands to Seattle, I found myself missing the abundant flower culture and effortless Dutch design that had become such a part of my life. In Seattle, I constantly bought fresh arrangements, trying to recreate that feeling of home only to watch them wilt in a week and feel guilty about the waste.

The idea crystallized during yet another grocery store flower run. What if I could bring the Dutch design aesthetic I missed so deeply into a sustainable solution? Create lasting beauty without the environmental guilt? Find a way to enjoy flowers that aligned with my values?

But here’s the entrepreneur reality check nobody talks about: having an idea while juggling a demanding full-time job is terrifying. Late nights became my creative time. Weekends turned into research sessions. I questioned everything: was this just homesickness talking? Could I actually pull this off?

The leap from “what if” to “let’s do this” happened when I realized I’d rather try and potentially fail than spend forever missing what I couldn’t recreate.

That moment of longing for home in a flower aisle became the foundation for everything that followed.

The Beautiful Reality of Building

Turning the idea into reality brought pure, beautiful chaos.

Building Jula Bloom while maintaining a demanding full-time job meant my life became early mornings, late nights, and weekends dedicated to the startup hustle. The quality of silk flowers and unique vases I envisioned simply couldn’t be found in the US, so I had to set up international logistics and import everything from the Netherlands.

The logistics were mind-boggling. Import regulations, shipping timelines, quality control from 5,000 miles away all while finding reliable suppliers and an expeditor in the Netherlands.

Finding the right creative partner proved equally challenging. After countless conversations and portfolio reviews, I met Kim, who became our Floral Designer based in Amsterdam. It was a match made in heaven! She designed our initial 15 bouquets for launch and later created our additional collections. She also led our first photoshoot in Amsterdam while I directed from Seattle at 2 a.m.: exhausting but magical watching those first professional images come to life.

Help arrived in many forms, especially from incredible women. We filmed social media content at a friend’s house, starring my sister Nathalie, who graciously became our “digital pollinator,” handling social media management. Kaye created an amazing design for our company name. Marketing guidance, legal advice, mentorship: this network of support later influenced how we name our bouquets, celebrating women who paved the way.

My perfectionist brain wanted everything flawless from day one, but reality taught me otherwise. Everything happened simultaneously: endless name searches with countless options, hunting for the perfect shipping boxes after major supplier disappointments, and building the website through late night hours that had me questioning my sanity.

Some days I wondered if attempting this international setup was complete madness.

But somewhere between the supply chain puzzles and 2 a.m. photoshoots, something clicked. This wasn’t just about recreating what I missed from home. I was reimagining flower joy entirely.

Finding Our Mission: More Than Business

The website launch was initially met with silence, not a single sale. But in the quiet that followed, something profound shifted. This wasn’t just about creating a business. It was about discovering my true purpose.

The deeper “why” crystallized gradually. People weren’t simply buying or renting arrangements. They were investing in lasting joy. High-quality silk flowers designed to bring beauty for years to come. Guilt-free beauty. Pollen-free spaces, safe for allergies; pet-friendly homes; pesticide-free environments. Who knew flowers could be this drama-free?

Our unique rental model opened unexpected possibilities. Forever flowers don’t mean being stuck with one design forever. Our circular approach lets people refresh their spaces while reducing waste. Circularity at its best: arrangements move from home to home, event to event, creating joy wherever they go without ending up in landfills.

This realization crystallized our mission: To Reimagine Flower Joy.

Becoming a certified 1% for the Planet member aligned our business model with our values. Every sale contributes to environmental nonprofits, turning purchases into positive impact.

What moved me most was witnessing women supporting women. From the incredible network that helped build Jula Bloom to women-led companies like Armoire and L’Avant Collective offering guidance, plus countless other women who cheered us on: the support was overwhelming in the best way. This inspired how we name our bouquets. The Angelou (Maya Angelou), The Kahlo (Frida Kahlo), The Rosa (Rosa Parks) celebrating pioneering women who paved the way.

When customers began sharing photos, event planners trusted us with their visions, and fellow entrepreneurs celebrated our wins, I came to realize that we weren’t just selling flowers but were creating a movement where beauty and responsibility coexist.

The First Year: Lessons in Growth

Our launch party was amazing, and sales in that first week exceeded expectations. But let me be honest about what the first year actually looked like, because entrepreneurship is beautifully messy, and pretending otherwise helps no one.

The Reality Check Moments

The website continuously crashed during those first three months, requiring a complete relaunch. As someone with an operations background, I suddenly had to step forward and learn to pitch my product. Spoiler alert: my first pitches were less than stellar, and I’m still perfecting them.

I said yes to every networking event (rookie mistake) and said no too often to my children: bedtime stories, games, chats. With kids ages 6, 14, and 16, they deserved better, and finding that balance became one of my greatest challenges. My full-time job demands complete attention, and I refuse to give any less, which meant Jula Bloom often received the exhausted, leftover version of me.

The rejections stung. Event planners loved the concept but weren’t ready to make the switch. Some potential customers questioned whether silk flowers were “real enough.” There were days I wondered if I was solving a problem that didn’t actually exist.

When the Magic Happened

Then came the breakthroughs. Corporate events that took chances on our sustainable approach and loved the results so much they booked us for multiple future events. Customers who sent photos of The Kahlo brightening their home offices during difficult work weeks. Couples who chose our rentals for anniversary dinners because they wanted beauty without waste.

One customer from the East Coast discovered us through an Instagram story share and ordered The Rosa for her new apartment because she “finally found flowers that matched her values.” Reading her heartfelt note made every late night worthwhile.

What I’ve Learned

Building something meaningful takes longer than anticipated and requires more of you than expected. Community matters infinitely more than competition. Authenticity consistently wins over perfection.

Blooms That Last. Impact That Matters.

What began as homesickness for Dutch flower culture has evolved into a mission to reimagine how we experience floral beauty. Through sustainable silk arrangements, circular rental models, and our commitment to environmental giving as a 1% for the Planet member, Jula Bloom represents more than flowers. We’re proof that beauty and responsibility can coexist.

The journey hasn’t been perfect. Websites crashed, pitches flopped, and work-life balance became a daily negotiation. But every customer who chooses sustainable beauty, every event that reduces waste through our rentals, and every dollar donated through our environmental partnerships reinforces why this mission matters.

Our arrangements move from space to space, creating joy without waste. Our bouquet names honor women who broke barriers. Our business model proves that profit and purpose can work hand in hand.

This is just the beginning. As we grow, our commitment remains the same: reimagining flower joy through sustainable design, one arrangement at a time.

Jula Bloom creates premium Dutch-inspired silk flower arrangements designed to bring lasting beauty for years to come. Based in Seattle, we offer both purchase and rental options for homes, workspaces, and events. As a proud 1% for the Planet member, we donate a portion of every sale to environmental nonprofits.
